Is This Tree Dangerous? 7 Warning Signs Homeowners in Downeast Maine Shouldn’t Ignore

We get this question all the time: “Is my tree dangerous?” If you live in Downeast Maine, you know how quickly a healthy-looking spruce, pine, or maple can turn into a real hazard when wind, snow, or ice move in.
As an ISA Certified Arborist and licensed Maine utility arborist, I spend a lot of time looking at trees that worry homeowners. Below are seven warning signs that a tree on your property may be unsafe and worth a professional inspection.
1. Large Dead Branches Over Your House, Driveway, or Power Lines
Dead limbs are often the first sign that a tree is in trouble. If you see large, dry branches with no needles or leaves directly over your home, driveway, camp, or power lines, that tree deserves attention.
In storms, these “widowmaker” branches can break without warning. In coastal winds around Bar Harbor, MDI, and the Blue Hill Peninsula, dead limbs can travel farther than you think.
2. A Sudden Lean or a Lean That’s Getting Worse
Some trees grow with a natural lean, especially when competing for light. But if you notice a tree that:
- Suddenly starts leaning after a storm, or
- Seems to be leaning more each season,
it could be a sign of root failure or structural weakness. This is especially important for trees near homes and driveways in Bangor, Ellsworth, and other Downeast towns where soil gets saturated and soft in spring and fall.
3. Cracks in the Trunk or Major Branches
Deep cracks, splits, or open seams in the trunk or large branches can indicate significant internal damage. These cracks can form after heavy snow or ice, high winds, or years of stress.
If you can see through a crack or it appears to run deep into the trunk, it is time to bring in an arborist for a tree assessment.
4. Mushrooms, Fungi, or Soft Wood at the Base
Fungi growing at the base of a tree or on major roots are often a sign of decay. While not every mushroom means the tree is doomed, it can indicate internal rot that weakens the trunk.
If you notice:
- Mushrooms or conks (shelf fungi) around the base
- Soft, spongy wood you can push your finger into
- Cavities or hollow areas at the base of the trunk
you should have the tree inspected, especially if it is close to your home, camp, or a commonly used area.
5. Roots That Are Damaged, Exposed, or Lifting
Tree roots are the anchor. If they fail, the whole tree can fail.
Warning signs include:
- Roots cut during driveway, septic, or foundation work
- Soil washed away, exposing a lot of roots after heavy rain
- Soil mounding or heaving on one side of the tree, as if it is starting to tip
In the sandy and rocky soils common across Downeast Maine, damaged roots can quickly lead to instability in high winds.
6. A Hollow or Heavily Decayed Trunk
Some trees can live with hollow sections, but it depends on how much sound wood remains. If you see a large cavity, missing chunks of trunk, or old wounds that never healed, you may be looking at a structural problem.
An arborist can use simple tools and training to judge whether the tree still has enough strong wood to remain safely in place.
7. A History of Storm Damage or Poor Pruning
If your tree has already lost major limbs in past storms or was badly topped years ago, its structure may be compromised. Poor pruning creates weak regrowth that is easily broken in wind and snow.
Trees along open driveways from Bangor to Machias are especially exposed to wind loading and can develop dangerous defects over time.
When to Call an Arborist
If you see one or more of these warning signs, especially near structures, parking areas, or power lines, it is worth a professional look. Not every risky tree needs to be removed—sometimes proper pruning or cabling can reduce hazard and keep the tree.
